Located roughly six miles west of Charlotte's central business district, Charlotte Douglas International Airport covers 5,558 acres in North Carolina. Functioning as a primary commercial-civil-military facility, it is one of the busiest airports in the United States. It handles tens of millions of passengers annually and acts as a fortress hub for American Airlines, which operates the vast majority of all flights operating through the facility.
Operating layout is remarkably straightforward, featuring a single large passenger terminal connected to five distinct concourses labeled A through E. American Airlines heavily dominates the terminal layout, maintaining exclusive control over Concourses B and C while sharing Concourses A, D, and E with other domestic, international, and regional carriers. International arrivals lacking preclearance are centrally processed through Concourse D.
01 Terminals & concourses
Concourse A features 32 gates across its main pier and two North extension piers. It serves American Airlines alongside carrier partners like Delta, United, Southwest, Frontier, Sun Country, and Air Canada.
Concourse B offers 16 gates dedicated exclusively to American Airlines mainline domestic flights. It houses an Admirals Club lounge for eligible travellers.
Concourse C contains 18 gates reserved solely for American Airlines mainline domestic services. It also shares access to an Admirals Club location.
Concourse D provides 13 gates serving American, Etihad, Lufthansa, and Volaris. All international flights arriving without prior customs preclearance are processed here.
Concourse E features 45 gates and houses American Eagle's regional operations, the largest in the world. Essential Air Service flights operated by Contour also depart from gates E1-E3.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage at CLT
If your checked bag doesn't turn up on the belt, act before you leave the baggage-claim area — that's where every airline keeps its Baggage Service Office.
- Go to your airline's Baggage Service Office in the baggage-claim hall of your arrival terminal.
- File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your file reference (WorldTracer) number. Keep your bag-tag receipt and boarding pass.
- Track it online using that reference on your airline's baggage-tracking page — most bags are located within 24–48 hours.
- Claim your essentials. On delayed bags airlines reimburse reasonable interim purchases (toiletries, clothing) — keep receipts. International trips are covered by the Montreal Convention.
- If it's truly lost (generally after 21 days) or damaged, file the claim at the same office — damage must be reported before you leave the airport.
Left something in the terminal (not a checked bag)? That's handled by the airport Lost & Found. Items left at a TSA security checkpoint are held by the TSA, not the airline.
