Located 9 kilometres south of Sydney's central business district in Mascot, Sydney Airport sits on 907 hectares next to Botany Bay. Operating as Australia's busiest airport and a primary global gateway, it managed 41.4 million passengers in 2024 across three operational runways. The facility serves as the main hub for flag carrier Qantas, a hub for Virgin Australia, and an operating base for Jetstar.

The airport divides its passenger operations across three numbered terminals, with the International Terminal (Terminal 1) physically separated from Domestic Terminals 2 and 3 by runway 16R/34L. Passengers transferring between the international and domestic sectors must allow 30 to 60-plus minutes for transfers. Operations are bounded by the Sydney Airport Curfew Act, which restricts overnight flights between 11 pm and 6 am alongside an 80-movement per hour cap.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage at SYD

If your checked bag doesn't turn up on the belt, act before you leave the baggage-claim area — that's where every airline keeps its Baggage Service Office.

  1. Go to your airline's Baggage Service Office in the baggage-claim hall of your arrival terminal.
  2. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your file reference (WorldTracer) number. Keep your bag-tag receipt and boarding pass.
  3. Track it online using that reference on your airline's baggage-tracking page — most bags are located within 24–48 hours.
  4. Claim your essentials. On delayed bags airlines reimburse reasonable interim purchases (toiletries, clothing) — keep receipts. International trips are covered by the Montreal Convention.
  5. If it's truly lost (generally after 21 days) or damaged, file the claim at the same office — damage must be reported before you leave the airport.

Left something in the terminal (not a checked bag)? That's handled by the airport Lost & Found. Items left at a TSA security checkpoint are held by the TSA, not the airline.
