Conceived by Iowa homebuilder Jack Krantz in the 1970s and opened for its first full season in 1975, Adventureland Resort sits in Altoona, Iowa, just northeast of Des Moines. Built on the site of a former 1920s airport and farmland, the park originally expanded Krantz's roadside pig-shaped food stand concept into an ambitious resort destination. Today, the resort complex is operated by Herschend following its acquisition in May 2025.

Spanning a layout heavily influenced by classic Disneyland design, visitors enter past a main train station into a turn-of-the-20th-century Main Street town square. Beyond the main entrance, the park unfolds into distinct themed zones, including Alpine Village, Outlaw Gulch, County Fair, Dragon Island, River City, Last Frontier, Iowa Farm, The Boulevard, Bernie's Barnyard, and the Adventure Bay water play area.

Adventureland is marketed as the 'Home of Iowa's Best Thrills' and caters to families, thrill-seekers, and multi-day resort travellers. The park is renowned for its signature coaster lineup—including the historic wooden Tornado coaster and the iconic Underground, the world's only fully enclosed wooden roller coaster—alongside live entertainment, water rides, and major seasonal events like the Halloween Phantom Fall Fest.

The wider resort complex includes an adjacent hotel facility, an onsite campground, interactive pools, and extensive dining venues. Thrill-seekers flock to signature coasters like The Monster, while younger children enjoy dedicated play zones such as Bernie's Barnyard and interactive water attractions at Kokomo Kove.
