Why Canal du Midi
The Canal du Midi is a famous 240-kilometer (150-mile) waterway running across Southern France, also known as le Midi. Constructed in the seventeenth century, this landmark navigation route links the Garonne River in Toulouse to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean coast. Together with the Garonne and its lateral canal, it creates the Canal des Deux Mers, establishing an inland passage between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Recognized globally for its extraordinary engineering and artistic design, the canal was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2016.
Traversing the French departments of Haute-Garonne, Aude, and Hérault, the waterway spans a varied landscape. It begins at Toulouse's Port de l'Embouchure and climbs 52 kilometers to its highest elevation point at the Seuil de Naurouze. From this summit, the channel drops across a distance of 188 kilometers toward its eastern end at Les Onglous in Marseillan. Key locations along its path include Castelnaudary, Carcassonne, Trèbes, the Fonserannes Locks near Béziers, and Agde. The canal maintains an average surface width of 20 meters, with channel lengths ranging from a brief 105-meter stretch between the two Fresquel locks to a continuous section of nearly 54 kilometers between Argens Lock and the Fonserannes Locks.
The concept of connecting the two seas had been envisioned by historical leaders ranging from Roman emperors like Augustus and Nero to French monarchs such as Charlemagne and François I. A direct canal route offered a way to transport trade goods without requiring ships to undertake a month-long voyage around the Iberian Peninsula, which was exposed to maritime risks like piracy. In 1666, King Louis XIV authorized construction under the direction of salt tax collector Pierre-Paul Riquet and minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert to expand the regional wheat trade. Completed in 1681 under its original title, the Canal Royal en Languedoc, it remains one of the oldest operating canals in Europe.
A central engineering challenge of the project was securing an adequate water supply for the summit section at Seuil de Naurouze. Riquet solved this by capturing rainfall and river water from the Montagne Noire. Utilizing feeder channels like the Rigole de la plaine, water was gathered from mountain streams—such as the Sor, Laudot, and Lampy—and directed into storage basins, including the Bassin de Saint-Ferréol and the Lampy reservoir. Owned by the French state, the historic waterway is managed today by the public agency Voies Navigables de France.
