Why Bourges Cathedral
Bourges Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral of Saint Stephen of Bourges, is a prominent Roman Catholic church situated in the city of Bourges, France. Serving as the seat of the Archbishop of Bourges, this landmark is celebrated for its quintessential High Gothic architecture, expansive interior space, and notable sculptural and glass art. Its historical and structural significance earned it designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
The site has a deep history extending back to early Christian times in the ancient city of Avaricum. Previous religious structures were erected against the city ramparts over the centuries, including Carolingian and 11th-century cathedrals. The current Gothic edifice was initiated around 1195 under Archbishop Henri de Sully, constructed contemporaneously with Chartres Cathedral. Builders first erected a lower church into the old town wall to serve as a foundation for the choir. Major construction on the main vessel and nave continued through the 13th century. Over the following centuries, the building endured fires, the collapse of its north tower in 1506, pillaging during the 16th-century Wars of Religion, and transformations during the French Revolution before undergoing extensive 19th-century restorations.
The cathedral's west front features an unusually wide facade with five sculpted portals, surpassing the standard four or fewer found on contemporary Gothic cathedrals. The central portal displays elaborate carvings of the Last Judgment, while side portals illustrate the lives of Saint Stephen, local saints such as Saint Ursinus, the Virgin Mary, and William of Donjeon. Additional exterior elements include a series of 13th-century bas-reliefs, reused 12th-century Romanesque side doorways, and two asymmetric towers. The taller north tower, rebuilt in Flamboyant Gothic style after its 16th-century collapse, is topped by a bronze pelican lantern and houses the cathedral's heavy bells. The shorter south tower is supported by a massive buttress that historically housed a small prison and an architect's office.
Inside, the cathedral is distinguished by its distinct stepped floor plan, where collateral aisles rise in staggered heights toward the central nave. The interior retains an extensive collection of 13th-century stained glass windows, along with an operational astronomical clock original to 1424. In the lower crypt area, visitors can find remaining stone fragments from a former medieval rood screen alongside the tomb effigy of Duke Jean de Berry and historic stained glass panels depicting prophets.
