Why Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is a prominent shoreline in southern Italy's Campania region, situated within the Province of Salerno. Looking out over the Gulf of Salerno and the Tyrrhenian Sea, this popular coastal destination lies on the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, positioned north of the Cilentan Coast and south of the peninsula's northern expanse. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the area derives its name from Amalfi, a town that has served as its central geographic and administrative focal point throughout history.
During the tenth and eleventh centuries, the region was governed by the Duchy of Amalfi, centered in its namesake settlement. Control later passed to the Principality of Salerno before the town of Amalfi was sacked by the Republic of Pisa in 1137. Over time, the area's dramatic natural landscapes earned it the moniker "Divine Coast" and established it as a frequented retreat for international travelers.
Geographically, the shoreline features steep terrain that limits space for agricultural and rural expansion. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate defined by gentle winters and warm summers. Thirteen distinct municipalities make up the territory, with many focused on tourism. Overland vehicular travel relies primarily on the 40-kilometer Amalfi Drive, also designated as Strada Statale 163, which traces the coast between Positano in the west and Vietri sul Mare in the east.
Local craft traditions and culinary specialties are integral to the region's economy. Terraced orchards across the coastline yield sfusato amalfitano lemons, which are harvested between February and October to produce limoncello liqueur. In Tramonti, a dark, spiced herb liqueur called concerto is made, while Cetara is recognized for a specialized anchovy product. Vietri produces vibrant handmade ceramics, and Amalfi is noted for bambagina, a traditional thick, handmade paper historically utilized for official documents, revenue stamps, and private correspondence.
Visitors can travel along the coastline using local bus networks and ferry services, with boat excursions departing from Amalfi and Positano. Air travelers accessing the area can arrive via Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, located nearby, or through Naples International Airport, which acts as the primary international entry point for the region.
