Why Göbekli Tepe
Göbekli Tepe, which translates to "Potbelly Hill," is a Neolithic archaeological mound located in Upper Mesopotamia within the Şanlıurfa Province of southeastern Turkey. Situated near the village of Örencik in the Taş Tepeler region, the site occupies a limestone plateau in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. It overlooks the Harran plain and the headwaters of the Balikh River, a tributary of the Euphrates. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this roughly 20-acre tell stands 15 meters high and contains some of the oldest known megalithic architecture in human history, dating from roughly 9500 BCE to 8000 BCE.
The surrounding environment at the time of occupation was wetter than present conditions, featuring an open steppe grassland filled with wild cereals such as einkorn, wheat, and barley. Wild sheep, goats, gazelles, and equids roamed the landscape, alongside pistachio and almond trees. Positioned on a high vantage point, the location provided prehistoric builders with extensive views across the plain below, as well as immediate access to soft limestone bedrock for constructing monuments and flint for crafting stone tools.
The central features of the site are large circular compounds measuring between 10 and 30 meters across. Embedded within thick walls of unworked stone are massive T-shaped limestone pillars, with two taller pillars positioned opposite one another at the center of each circle. Many of these monoliths feature carved reliefs of wild animals, including lions, bulls, boars, foxes, gazelles, snakes, insects, and vultures, alongside abstract symbols and stylized human elements like arms and loincloths. Interior stone benches line these structures, which may have originally been roofed.
In addition to the large enclosures, the mound contains ancient domestic habitations that evolved from round and oval floor plans to rectangular layouts over successive phases. To maintain a drinking water supply, the community constructed a rainwater harvesting system consisting of carved bedrock channels leading to underground cisterns capable of holding at least 150 cubic meters of water. Prehistoric quarries, processing tools such as grinding stones, and a small cave containing a bovid relief have also been documented across the plateau.
First noted during an archaeological survey in 1963, the site's significance was recognized in 1994 by German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, who began excavations the next year. Modern fieldwork continues under a joint initiative involving Istanbul University, the Şanlıurfa Museum, and the German Archaeological Institute. Although geophysical surveys indicate the presence of at least 20 large enclosures beneath the surface, only a small portion of the complex has been excavated.
