Why Church of the Ascension, Kolomenskoye
Kolomenskoye is a historic former royal estate covering 390 hectares along the elevated banks of the Moskva River, located several kilometers southeast of central Moscow along the ancient highway to Kolomna. First mentioned in the 1339 testament of Grand Prince Ivan Kalita, the property gradually became a favored country haven for Muscovite rulers before being incorporated into the city of Moscow during the 1960s.
The centerpiece of the site is the Church of the Ascension, built in 1532 from white stone to mark the long-awaited birth of the heir who became Ivan the Terrible. Known as the White Column, it was the earliest stone church constructed with a tented roof, marking a distinct break from Byzantine design tradition in favor of vertical styles borrowed from northern Russian wooden churches. The structure rises from a low, cross-shaped ground floor into an octagonal main body and a soaring octagonal tent topped with a tiny dome. Decorated with slender pilasters, pointed window frames, tiered arched kokoshniks, stair arcades, and open galleries, the architectural masterpiece was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
Throughout its history, Kolomenskoye hosted significant imperial residences. Tsar Alexis I erected a vast wooden palace featuring 250 rooms and intricate passageways, which served as his preferred summer retreat, the birthplace of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in 1709, and a childhood residence of Peter the Great. Demolished in 1768 by Catherine II, the grand residence was recreated in 2010 based on surviving original plans, positioned roughly one kilometer south of its original foundation. Other surviving historical buildings include the 16th-century Church of John the Baptist in Dyakovo, the Church of Saint George, a water tower, administrative chambers, and historic entry gates.
In the early Soviet era, restorer Pyotr Baranovsky gathered historic wooden buildings and cultural artifacts from across the Soviet Union to establish an architectural collection at the park. Brought-in features include Peter the Great's house from the Northern Dvina, a fortress tower from Sumskoy Ostrog, and a barbican church. Visitors to the park can also view an ancient oak grove, the archaeological Dyakovo settlement, and natural landmarks such as the Zhuzha River and Golosov Ravine, which features sacred stones, streams, and natural springs.
