Why Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park is a protected area situated in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the Albertine Rift Valley. Originally established in 1925 as the country's first national park, the preserve stretches approximately 300 kilometers from north to south along the borders with Uganda and Rwanda. It covers an expansive area of 7,800 square kilometers, bounded by the Puemba River to the north and Tchegera Island in Lake Kivu to the south. Elevations vary significantly across the terrain, rising from 680 meters in the Semliki River valley to 5,109 meters at Mount Stanley within the Rwenzori Mountains.

The park is organized into three administrative sectors along the Congo–Nile watershed divide. The Northern Sector contains the Rwenzori Mountains, the Semliki River, Mount Tshiaberimu, and extends to Lake Edward. The Central Sector encompasses the western and southern shores of Lake Edward, the Rwindi–Rutshuru plains, and the Lulimbi zone along the Ishasha River. The Southern Sector is defined by the Virunga Mountains and features Afromontane forests alongside dormant Mount Mikeno and two active volcanoes, Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira. Features such as Lake Ondo, the Kibuga pond, lava flow marshlands, and the Molindi spring mark the transition between the central and southern areas.

Initially named Albert National Park, the reserve was created to preserve wildlife and support scientific research, gradually expanding its boundaries in subsequent decades. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for its rich natural diversity and unique habitats, and was later designated as a Ramsar site in 1996. The park's central administrative operations are located at Rumangabo. Over the years, environmental protection efforts have faced ongoing challenges from regional conflicts, deforestation, resource extraction interests, and poaching, leading to its placement on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1994.

More than 3,000 plant and animal species inhabit the preserve, including over 300 species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift. Plant life comprises 2,077 recorded species, ranging from high-altitude forests to lowland savannas featuring papyrus sedge, reeds, and thorn trees. Notable wildlife inhabiting the region includes the eastern gorilla and the golden monkey. Large mammals such as African elephants roam the grasslands, serving a key role in dispersing plant seeds throughout the landscape.

Temperatures in the park's lower elevations typically range between 23 and 28 degrees Celsius, while higher elevations experience cooler averages of 16 to 24 degrees Celsius. The climate includes two primary rainy periods running from March to mid-May and from September to November. Precipitation varies across the park, with the savannas around Lake Edward being the driest area, while the northern and southern sectors receive higher rainfall. Tourist infrastructure in the region includes the Mount Mikeno Hotel, visitor activities around Tchegera Island, and the Rugari–Bukima road, which aids travel toward the Mount Mikeno area.
