Set in the Pylaros region in the northwest of Kefalonia island in the Ionian Sea of Greece, Myrtos Beach lies dramatically between the feet of two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros. You can reach this spectacular coastal destination by traveling to the village of Divarata or taking a seasonal public bus from the harbour area in Agia Efimia. A steep, winding two-kilometer road with sharp hairpin turns leads travelers down the mountainside directly toward the shore.
The beach features a mile-and-a-half long arc composed of round, white marble cobblestones that gradually decrease in size to pebbles near the water's edge. Because of an abrupt drop in the slope angle near the shoreline, the wave energy here is extremely high. These strong waves pick up fine marble sediment, creating striking plumes that follow the curve of the shore and tint the water a vivid shade of turquoise.
Tucked beneath soaring limestone cliffs, Myrtos Beach offers a dramatic natural setting that has earned it votes as the best Greek beach twelve times. While private-car parking sits right at the base of the cliffs, you will find several local tavernas situated at the top of the access road in the village of Divarata. Its cinematic beauty famously served as a filming location for a mine explosion episode in Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
