Why Calbayog
Calbayog is a component city located along the coastal stretch of Samar province in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. Functioning as a major commercial trade center, it is the most populous municipality in the province and ranks among the largest cities in the country by combined land and water area. Its geography extends roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) from the northern tip of Samar island and 180 miles (290 kilometers) from its southern boundaries.
The terrain of Calbayog consists of a mix of landscapes. Low plain and hilly areas with elevations from 5 to 20 meters make up forty percent of the total land area, while the remaining territory is defined by rugged mountain ranges rising between 300 and 700 meters above sea level. The city is traversed by numerous natural water conveyors, streams, brooks, and rivers that drain into the ocean. The local weather pattern features various seasonal winds and well-distributed rainfall throughout most of the year, outside of a drier summer season from February through May.
Administratively, the city is divided into three primary districts: Calbayog, Tinambacan, and Oquendo. The Calbayog District in the south and east serves as the core political and commercial sector, Tinambacan covers the northern coastline, and Oquendo is situated in the northeast. Over time, the area developed through the merging of several older municipalities. It holds historical ties to the Katipunan revolutionary movement through local figures such as Benedicto Nijaga, and it became an episcopal see for the regional Roman Catholic diocese in 1910. After undergoing Japanese occupation during World War II and liberation in 1945, Calbayog was granted city status in 1948.
Cultural and institutional landmarks in Calbayog include historic educational establishments such as Christ the King College, St. Vincent de Paul Seminary, and the Northwest Samar State University. The region's natural environment and municipal supply system incorporate notable natural sites, including the Himonini River, Pasungon Falls, and an irrigation dam reservoir located near Malajog.
