Why Santa Cruz del Quiché
Santa Cruz del Quiché is a city located in the highlands of Guatemala, serving as both the capital of the El Quiché department and the municipal seat for its surrounding municipality. Situated at an elevation of 2,021 meters (6,631 feet) above sea level, the city recorded a population of 78,279 during the 2018 census. It is characterized by a subtropical highland climate and is accessible via Quiché Airport, which is positioned directly south of the city center.
The town's origins date back to the Spanish colonial era, when it was founded by Pedro de Alvarado following the destruction of Q'umarkaj, the nearby K'iche' Maya capital. Dominican friars subsequently constructed the settlement's early stone buildings by reusing materials recovered from the Q'umarkaj ruins. Prominent surviving examples of this early architecture include a cathedral and a central plaza clock tower.
In addition to its built heritage, the location holds historic significance related to Indigenous literature. It is widely considered the site where K'iche' nobles of the Nim Ch'okoj class transcribed the Popol Vuh, the sacred text of the Maya. Following the conquest, the former native rulers were reduced to peasant status, and the settlement developed under the administration of Dominican monastic doctrines until regional ecclesiastical reforms took place in the mid-eighteenth century.
During the twentieth century, the layout of regional transport infrastructure altered the city's connectivity. Because the Pan-American Highway bypassed Santa Cruz del Quiché, the city evolved into a primary travel stop along the main route leading into the northern sector of the El Quiché department. Outside the city, a military base was also established, which served as a key regional operational post during the internal armed conflict of the late twentieth century.
