Why Mairiporã
Mairiporã is a municipality situated in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, where it forms part of the greater São Paulo metropolitan region. Occupying a territory of 321 square kilometers (124 square miles), the city had an estimated population of 101,937 in 2020. Nestled within the Serra da Cantareira region directly north of the capital city of São Paulo, Mairiporã is known as a convenient destination for travelers seeking a serene connection with nature without venturing far from the metropolitan hub.
The area originally separated from the neighboring municipality of Guarulhos in 1889 under the historic name of Juqueri. At that time, its territory was significantly broader, encompassing land that later developed into the present-day municipalities of Franco da Rocha, Caieiras, and Francisco Morato. In December 1948, the municipality officially changed its name to Mairiporã. The name originates from indigenous roots, combining "mairy," meaning village or city, with "poranga," meaning beautiful, translating literally to "beautiful city."
Geographically, the municipality sits at a mean elevation of 790 meters above sea level. Its terrain rises significantly along the Serra da Cantareira mountain range, where certain elevated points surpass 1,100 meters. Mairiporã experiences a subtropical climate typical of the São Paulo metropolitan region. Winters are generally mild, while summers are noticeably warm and wet. Across the year, the average temperature is approximately 18 °C. July represents the coldest month with a 14 °C average, whereas February is the warmest month, averaging 22 °C. Annual rainfall across the region measures around 1,400 millimeters.
Nature and outdoor recreation form a significant part of Mairiporã's appeal. The municipality contains a portion of Cantareira State Park, an expansive reserve established in 1962 covering 7,917 hectares (19,560 acres) that plays a critical role in protecting the water supply for the surrounding metropolitan population. The local landscape supports a variety of extreme sports and active pursuits. Popular spots include Pico do Olho D'água for paragliding, the Trilha da Saracura for downhill riding, and the Trilha dos Macacos, which features natural waterfalls.
Transportation to and through Mairiporã is facilitated by key highway connections. The primary route is the BR-381, also known as Rodovia Fernão Dias, which connects the city of São Paulo to Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais. This federal highway crosses the municipality from south to north, extending from Parque Suíço in the south to Terra Preta in the north. Regional access is further supported by the SP-023, or Rodovia Prefeito Luiz Salomão Chamma, which links the SP-332 in Franco da Rocha directly to the BR-381.
