Why Ourense
Ourense is a provincial capital situated along the Miño River in south-central Galicia, northwestern Spain. Resting at an elevation of 128 meters above sea level among surrounding oak and pine forests, it stands as the third-largest city in the region. The destination is widely celebrated for its thermal heritage, earning the Galician moniker A cidade das Burgas. Millions of liters of hot spring waters flow daily throughout the province, supplying an extensive network of outdoor thermal baths and historic geothermal features.
Four rivers traverse the city: the Barbaña, Loña, Barbañica, and the primary Miño River, which separates an industrial western district and railway hub from the historic city center. The thermal springs remain a central highlight, ranging from the downtown As Burgas complex—where ancient Roman bath ruins are open to visitors—to thermal areas situated along the Miño. Bathing sites such as Termas da Chavasqueira, Fonte do Tinteiro, Pozas do Muíño da Veiga, and Pozas de Outariz offer mineral-rich waters emerging at temperatures ranging between 43 °C and 72 °C.
Ourense originated as a Roman settlement established to guard a river crossing and utilize the natural hot springs. The city later formed part of the Suebi Kingdom between the fifth and seventh centuries before enduring destruction by Moorish forces, Norse raiders, and Arab warlords. Rebuilt under royal patronage and repopulated in the eleventh century, the town experienced significant urban development by the twelfth century. It was also home to a medieval Jewish community until 1492. Today, the city is a notable location for travelers following the Way of St. James, situated along the Camino Sanabrés, the Portuguese Way, and La Ruta de la Plata.
The city consists of a medieval core, a nineteenth-century expansion district, and a modern perimeter. At the center of the medieval section lies the Plaza Mayor, featuring arcaded shops, the Town Hall, and narrow surrounding streets lined with traditional dining establishments. Nearby, the Cathedral of Ourense—originally founded in 572 and rebuilt in the thirteenth century—blends Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, containing the Door of Paradise entrance and the sixteenth-century Christ's Chapel. Spanning the Miño River is the pedestrianized Ponte Vella, a historic bridge with Roman origins restored in 1230.
Influenced by the topography of the river valley, Ourense experiences a localized hot-summer Mediterranean microclimate. Summer daytime temperatures average around 30 °C, though maximum highs have exceeded 44 °C, while winters are wet with daytime temperatures near 12 °C. Rail transport connects to the city via the Ourense Railway Station.
