Why Parintins
Parintins is a municipality situated in the far eastern region of the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Occupying an area of 6,044 square kilometers on Tupinambarana island along the right bank of the Amazon River, it stands as the state's second-largest city by population after Manaus. Positioned 369 kilometers from Manaus and approximately 1,757 kilometers from Brasília, the municipality functions as a trade hub for transferring agricultural yields from the Madeira River toward the Atlantic Ocean.
The city is celebrated throughout Brazil for hosting the Parintins Folklore Festival, an annual event taking place each June. This festival focuses on the regional tradition of Boi-Bumbá and features indigenous Amazonian craftsmanship and artistic displays during its presentations. Beyond its traditional cultural heritage, Parintins was selected in late 2006 for an experimental WiMAX network deployment sponsored by Intel.
Long before European arrival, the area was inhabited by indigenous populations, including the native tribe for which the city was eventually renamed. European exploration occurred in 1749 when José Gonçalves da Fonseca observed the island while traveling down the Amazon River. Permanent settlement began in 1796 under José Pedro Cordovil, who introduced large-scale cocoa agriculture and arapaima fishing. The location was made a religious mission named Vila Nova da Rainha in 1803 under Friar José das Chagas, later becoming a parish, attaining municipality status as Vila Bela Imperatriz in 1848, and officially receiving the name Parintins in 1880.
Administratively, the municipality includes two prominent districts: the District of Mocambo and the District of Vila Amazonia. Travelers connecting to or from the destination are served by the municipal aviation gateway, Júlio Belém Airport.
Parintins features an isothermal tropical rainforest climate with high relative humidity averaging 83.5 percent. The area receives an annual rainfall of over 2,300 millimeters, with March recording the highest monthly precipitation, whereas the period from July to September represents the driest quarter. Temperatures remain elevated throughout the year, maintaining an overall annual average of 27.2 °C and average daily highs of 31.7 °C, with October registering as the warmest month.
