Why Lysychansk
Lysychansk is a city located in the Sievierodonetsk Raion of Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Situated on the elevated right bank of the Donets River, it lies about 115 kilometers (71 miles) from the oblast's administrative center of Luhansk. It sits opposite its twin city of Sievierodonetsk and is positioned near the towns of Rubizhne and Kreminna. Prior to 2022, Lysychansk had an estimated population of around 93,340, ranking as the fourth-largest urban center in Luhansk Oblast and the 40th-largest nationwide.
Human activity along the Donets River in the region dates back to the Lower Paleolithic era. Archaeological traces include Kurgan stelae left by the Catacomb culture, Scythian barbed arrowheads, and stone statues carved by the Polovtsian people. During the 17th century, Cossacks established early outposts and settlements in the area, such as Borivske in 1672 and Lisya Balka in 1710, the latter named after a local ravine known for its fox population. The locality was also historically referred to as Oleniachi Hory, or Deer Mountains, before local deer were hunted to extinction by the late 18th century.
The area's trajectory changed fundamentally in 1721 with the discovery of coal, marking the earliest known coal find in the Donbas region. In 1795, under Empress Catherine II, the region's first coal mine, Petropavlivska, was established to supply a newly constructed foundry in Luhansk. The surrounding settlement grew under the early name of Workers' Quarters before officially adopting the name Lysychansk by the 1860s. Foreign investments in the late 19th century—most notably by Belgian industrialist Ernest Solvay, who built a major soda plant, high-tech coal facilities, and an aerial cableway—spurred significant urban growth. A collection of these late-19th-century Belgian-built structures later received the Belgian Heritage Abroad Award.
Lysychansk officially gained city status in 1938. Over the 20th century, it expanded into a prominent industrial hub recognized for coal mining, glass manufacturing, and oil refining. Cultural and historical landmarks in the city include the City Museum of Local Lore, the Museum of the History of Mining, the protected natural area of Congressiv Yar, the Steiger School, historic Polovtsian stone statues, and a military monument featuring an L-29 aircraft. Educational institutions in the city include the Mining-Industrial Professional College and the Lysychansk Medical Professional College.
