Why Oued Zem
Oued Zem is an inland city located in the Khouribga Province within the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region of Morocco. According to the 2014 census, the city recorded a population of 95,267. The surrounding geography is rich in natural mineral resources, particularly phosphate, iron, and marble. The municipality's name reflects its traditional roots, combining the Arabic term "Oued," meaning river, with the Amazigh word "Zem," meaning lion, which historically referred to the Atlas lions that once inhabited the area near the local river.
The city features a continental climate characterized by a wet season from October to April and a dry period between May and September. Oued Zem receives around 400 millimeters of rainfall annually, with a mean temperature averaging 18 degrees Celsius. Winds in the area are typically mild, blowing from the north during the summer months and from the north and northeast during the wetter times of the year.
Modern urban growth began during the French protectorate, when the location was chosen as a strategic base to oversee the Tadla and Atlas regions. Following the discovery of phosphate, the region's first railway was built in 1917 to transport the mineral to Casablanca. A formal urban master plan was created in 1924 using European design standards, triggering migration from surrounding areas. This expansion created several distinct historical neighborhoods, such as the Al-Hariya Quarter with its twice-weekly grain market, the Chaabi Quarter, the Al-Aqwas Quarter, and the European Quarter, which historically accommodated civil and military families alongside a Jewish church.
Among the notable features of Oued Zem is a prominent lake created during the protectorate period near the Zarda valley to replace the original Al-Ain water spring. Designed in the geographic shape of France, the lake remains a local gathering place and outdoor spot for residents today. The town played a significant part in the nation's struggle for independence, marked by a major uprising on August 20, 1955, involving tribes such as the Al-Sama'ala, Bani Samir, and Bani Khairan, which earned the location recognition as the City of Revolution and Martyrs.
Oued Zem is also home to a historic football team, Rapide Club Oued Zem, which was established in 1926 and plays in the Botola Pro 2 league. The team was named as a tribute to the visiting Austrian club Rapid Vienna. Notable individuals connected to the city include the singer and actress Jannat, as well as professional footballer Rachid Soulaimani.
