Why Şırnak
Şırnak is an inland city located in Turkey, serving as both the seat of the Şırnak District and the administrative capital of Şırnak Province. Positioned near the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing with Iraq, the city functions as a major transit link connecting Turkey to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Historically recognized as part of Turkish Kurdistan, the city recorded a population of 75,932 inhabitants in 2023, with a local populace predominantly composed of Kurds belonging to the Şirnexî tribe.
The historical background of the settlement extends back to the 9th century AD. During this era, as the power of the Abbasid Caliphate began to diminish, a number of Kurdish emirates were established across the region. Among these historical ruling entities was the Marwanid dynasty, whose territorial authority encompassed the city of Şırnak.
Culturally and demographically, Şırnak Province exhibits a high degree of linguistic continuity, maintaining one of the highest proportions of residents in Turkey who identify Kurdish as their native mother tongue. Sociolinguistic research highlights a notable concentration of Kurmanji speakers, which serves as the predominant spoken language, alongside Zaza speakers. Demographic projections also indicate that the area is expected to experience one of the highest population growth rates among the country's Kurdish regions.
The municipal structure of the city is divided into twelve distinct neighborhoods. These local districts consist of Aşağıhan, Atatürk, Aydınlar, Bahçelievler, Boğaz, Cadırlı, Çavuşhan, Hatipler, Nasırhan, Şafak, Yayla, and Yeni. In terms of economic indicators, figures from 2013 recorded an unemployment rate of 20.1 percent within the city.
Şırnak features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, designated as Csa under the Köppen classification system. Because of its inland location, relative humidity remains low throughout the year. The regional weather patterns bring chilly, snowy conditions during the winter, which contrast with extremely hot and dry summer seasons.
Precipitation in Şırnak fluctuates heavily depending on the season. Late winter and early spring mark the wettest period, with February and March seeing the highest rainfall. Conversely, July and August are the driest months, receiving virtually no precipitation. Recorded temperature extremes in the city span from a low of minus 14.5 degrees Celsius in January 2009 to high temperatures reaching 40.4 degrees Celsius in July 2011 and August 2023, with a peak temperature of 42.3 degrees Celsius recorded in July 2025.
