Why Ponta Porã
Ponta Porã is a municipality situated in the southern part of the Center-West region of Brazil, within the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Encompassing an area of 5,329 square kilometers, the city is home to roughly 99,572 residents. It sits directly along an open dry border, forming an urban conurbation with the neighboring Paraguayan city of Pedro Juan Caballero. Given this close international connection, Paraguay maintains a diplomatic consulate within the town.
Geographically, the municipality lies 324 kilometers from Campo Grande, the state capital, and 1,346 kilometers from the national capital of Brasília. Ponta Porã experiences a humid subtropical climate, maintaining an average annual temperature of approximately 29 °C (84 °F) throughout the year. The local economy relies on livestock and agriculture, with main regional crops including soybeans, wheat, and corn. Air transport is facilitated by Ponta Porã International Airport, which provides scheduled flights to São Paulo.
Before the establishment of permanent settlements, the surrounding interior region was inhabited by Indigenous Nhandevas and Caiuás, descendants of the Guarani people. The location initially served as a resting spot for travelers moving between Brazil and Paraguay. Following an exploratory military expedition in 1777, a base called the Military Colony of Dourados was established near the Dourados River in 1862. This outpost was destroyed during the Paraguayan War in 1864, but after the war concluded in 1872, official boundaries placed the area within Brazilian territory.
Economic progress accelerated in the late 19th century, driven by yerba mate processing and export to Argentina starting in 1882, along with the arrival of Gaucho immigrants who established cattle raising and farming. Ponta Porã became part of the Bela Vista district in 1900 before being established as an independent municipality in 1913. A military cavalry regiment was created in 1919, and in 1943, the municipality briefly served as the capital city for the Federal Territory of Ponta Porã. It officially became part of Mato Grosso do Sul upon the state's creation in 1977.
Beyond its historical and agricultural background, the border city holds a presence in popular culture. Ponta Porã is featured as the principal setting during the opening portions of the novel The Partner by John Grisham.
