Why Torrent

Torrent, known locally in Valencian as Torrent and in Spanish as Torrente, is a municipality and city situated within the metropolitan region of Valencia in eastern Spain. Located approximately seven kilometers from the city of Valencia, it serves as the largest municipality in the Horta Oest district. The territory is bordered by neighboring Valencian municipalities including Aldaia, Alaquàs, Xirivella, Picanya, Catarroja, Alcàsser, Picassent, Montserrat, Godelleta, Turís, and Xiva. Public transit connects Torrent directly to Valencia through two metro stations serving lines 1, 2, and 7.

The local landscape features a mix of flat land and low mountain terrain, with roughly one-fifth of the municipal territory classified as mountainous. Notable high points include El Vedat, Morredondo, Barret, Cabeçol de l'Aranya, and the Serra Perenxisa, which reaches 329 meters above sea level. The area is also defined by the Barranc de Torrent, a natural gully running through the municipality that drains into the Albufera lagoon and estuary.

Archaeological evidence indicates human presence in the area dating back to the Bronze Age. Although a defensive tower and fortification were constructed earlier, the formal settlement was established by European settlers in 1248 following the Reconquista. Historically, the location operated as a fiefdom held by the Knights Hospitaller.

Among the principal historic sites is the Medieval Tower, a 30-meter Moorish structure that formed part of a former castle complex. Built in the shape of a truncated pyramid with five levels and an upper terrace, its exterior features the Cross of Saint John of Jerusalem and the traditional Valencian bat emblem. Over the centuries, the tower served as a prison, hosted market porticoes and judicial offices, and came under municipal ownership in 1847. Following structural restoration, the building now houses two exhibition spaces.

Additional points of interest include historic religious structures. The Hermitage of Sant Lluís Bertran, originally authorized by the local council in 1634, presents a neoclassical facade divided into three sections, an entrance adorned with a rosette, and an 1829 hexagonal bell tower. The site remains connected to local traditions such as the festivities of Sant Blai. Furthermore, the parish church of Nostra Senyora de l'Assumpció occupies the location of a smaller 13th-century church and features design elements reflecting multiple rebuilds after historical fires and damage.
