Why Sechura
Sechura is an urban settlement located in the northwestern region of Peru, positioned roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) to the south of Piura. Serving as the capital of Sechura Province within the broader Piura Region, the town shares its name with the extensive Sechura Desert, an arid geographical zone that stretches southward across the majority of coastal Peru.
Geography around the city is heavily defined by its dry surroundings. To the south of the settlement, crescent sand dunes form a distinct landscape feature, situated directly in the area between the ocean shoreline and the regional highway.
Culturally and historically, the heart of the town is focused around its central main square. Here, visitors can view the Catédral de Sechura, a prominent place of worship erected in the 18th century following the Spanish colonial architectural style. On account of the vast desert environment that encompasses the entire city, this landmark church has earned the informal moniker of Catédral de Arena, which translates to the Sand Cathedral.
The region is subject to a hot desert climate, designated as Köppen BWh, which brings consistently high temperatures throughout the entire year paired with exceptionally minimal overall precipitation. The atmospheric conditions naturally divide into two main periods across the calendar year.
The warmer portion of the year spans from December through May. February represents the peak of this hot season, featuring average daily maximum temperatures of 33 °C (91 °F) and average daily minimums of 23 °C (73 °F). Although rainfall is rare, the majority of Sechura's total annual precipitation of 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) occurs during the months between January and March.
Conversely, the span from June to November brings the cooler half of the year, characterized by warm conditions and virtually negligible rainfall. August is recorded as the coolest month of the cycle, maintaining average daytime high temperatures of 26 °C (79 °F) alongside nighttime low temperatures averaging 17 °C (63 °F).
