Why Shakhtarsk
Shakhtarsk is an urban center located within the Horlivka Raion of Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Serving as the administrative focal point for the surrounding urban hromada, the city developed primarily as an industrial municipality tied closely to regional economic activities.
Originally known as the urban-type settlement of Katyk, the community acquired urban-type settlement status in 1938 before officially being designated as a city in August 1953. At that time, it was renamed Shakhtyorsk, a name derived from the word for coal miner, which itself traces back to the German term for a mine shaft. A local newspaper has been in continuous publication in the municipality since May 1946.
Throughout the mid to late 20th century, coal extraction formed the primary foundation of the local economy. By the late 1980s, economic activities expanded to include clothing production and knitwear manufacturing, supporting a population that reached over 73,000 residents by 1989. Over the decades, educational infrastructure developed alongside its industries, including four vocational schools established during the Soviet era and a trade college opened in 1964, which later became a commercial college.
The municipal economy experienced notable shifts in subsequent decades, marked by the closure of one vocational school in 1997, followed by the bankruptcy of the local textile factory in 2000 and the mechanical-repair plant after 2008. The city's population shifted from roughly 72,000 in 1985 to approximately 51,007 in 2013 and an estimated 48,208 by 2022.
In mid-April 2014, control of towns throughout Donetsk Oblast, including Shakhtarsk, was assumed by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. Brief military engagements occurred in late July 2014 when Ukrainian forces entered the city, after which the DPR militia reestablished control of the area. The city remains under Russian occupation.
