Why Rîbnița

Rîbnița, also known as Rybnitsa, is an industrial city located in the northern region of Transnistria on the eastern bank of the Dniester River. Separated from the river waters by a large concrete dam, the city functions as the administrative center of the surrounding Rîbnița District. With a population recorded at 53,648 during the 2004 census, the city's demographic makeup includes a significant population of Ukrainians, Russians, and Moldovans, along with smaller minority communities.

Originally established in 1628 as a Ruthenian village named Rybnytsia, which translates to "fishery," the settlement grew into a notable town by the mid-17th century. It spent over a century as a private estate owned by Polish noble families within the Kingdom of Poland, displaying Western European cultural traits before passing to the Russian Empire in 1793. The city subsequently transitioned through Ukrainian and Soviet administration in the 20th century. During World War II, the town endured occupation and hosted a ghetto alongside a wartime penitentiary, events marked by significant historical casualties among its Jewish and detainee populations.

Modern Rîbnița features a busy urban center defined by tall buildings, active commercial life, and its primary thoroughfare, Victory Street. The city's architectural landscape is complemented by numerous local monuments, as well as a popular public park positioned beside the town reservoir. Indicative of its diverse heritage, a Catholic church, an Orthodox church, and a synagogue stand adjacent to one another within the city. Rîbnița is also home to the professional football team FC Iskra-Stal Rîbnița, which competes in the Divizia Națională.

Economically, the city is a major industrial hub anchored by the Moldova Steel Works plant, which accounts for substantial export volume and regional revenue. Additional economic facilities include a cement plant, an alcohol distillery, a modern supermarket, and a historic sugar refinery established in 1898. Travelers and goods pass through the settlement via its river port facilities and large railway station.
