Why Sena Madureira
Sena Madureira is a municipality situated in the central region of Acre, a state in northwestern Brazil. Spanning 25,278 square kilometers (9,760 square miles), it is the geographically largest municipal area in Acre and home to a population of 46,511 inhabitants. Located approximately 143 kilometers from the state capital of Rio Branco, the town serves as a key inland destination in the region.
The history and heritage of Sena Madureira are reflected in its architectural landmarks, most notably the Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição Church. Constructed in 1910, this historic site holds the distinction of being the oldest standing church in the state of Acre.
A significant portion of the municipality's territory is covered by protected natural areas and rainforest conservation zones. Sena Madureira encompasses parts of several environmental reserves, including a section of the Rio Acre Ecological Station and nearly the entirety—98 percent—of the 750,795-hectare (1,855,250-acre) Cazumbá-Iracema Extractive Reserve, which was created in 2002 to facilitate the sustainable use of natural resources by local populations. Additionally, the municipality covers roughly 12 percent of Chandless State Park, a 695,303-hectare (1,718,130-acre) preserve established in 2004 that safeguards bamboo-dominated rainforest environments filled with endemic plant and animal species.
Visitors to the area will also find extensive state and national forests designated for sustainable environmental management. Sena Madureira contains portions of the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve, established in 1990 across 931,537 hectares (2,301,880 acres), as well as the 176,349-hectare (435,770-acre) Macauã National Forest created in 1988. Other notable preserves within its borders include the São Francisco National Forest, formed in 2001, and approximately 27 percent of the 46,064-hectare (113,830-acre) Antimary State Forest, established in 1997.
Throughout the entire year, Sena Madureira experiences a consistently warm and tropical environment. Temperatures average around 78 °F (26 °C), accompanied by high relative humidity levels that routinely reach into the upper 90s percent.
