Why Buena Fe
Buena Fe is a city situated within the Los Ríos Province of Ecuador. It serves as an urban center and a canton that encompasses the rural parish of Patricia Pilar, alongside several distinct local sectors such as San Francisco, Cuatro Mangas, La Reserva, Fumisa, 24 de Mayo, Glance, La Catorce, Pechiche, Los Angeles, and Zulema. The urban heart of the area is recognized as the parish of San Jacinto de Buena Fe.
The history of the settlement began in 1943 following the arrival of early homesteaders. A key figure, Medardo Rosa Espinoza Cabezas Figueroa Carrillo, leased land in the area currently identified as Las Vegas and established a small store named Buena Fe, which translates to "Good Faith." As time passed, this name was adopted by the broader community as additional residents constructed houses nearby, leading to the establishment of a formal village.
Following a period of sustained local growth, the community was officially recognized as a rural parish under the Quevedo Canton through a decree issued on October 11, 1979. It remained part of Quevedo until a dedicated advocacy group, led by Gilberto Salinas, petitioned for independent canton status. This efforts led to a legislative decree that was signed into law by President Rodrigo Borja Cevallos and officially published in the government gazette on August 7, 1992.
Geographically, the canton spans a highly fertile region that supports a robust agricultural and agro-industrial economy. The surrounding lands are actively used for raising cattle and cultivating a wide range of crops, including cocoa, coffee, oil palm, and various tropical fruits. Visitors exploring the territory can observe these agricultural landscapes and the interconnected rural communities that make up the district.
