Why Skierniewice
Skierniewice is a historic city situated along the small Łupia River, also known as the Skierniewka, in the Łódź Voivodeship of central Poland. Positioned within the traditional region of Masovia, it functions as the seat of Skierniewice County. Known widely as the Polish Capital of Horticultural Sciences, the city earned this reputation through a academic tradition dating back to 1922, when specialized university departments for vegetable cultivation and pomology were established. Today, this heritage is celebrated through the annual Skierniewice Festival of Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables.
Originating in the medieval era, the settlement was first documented in 1359 when it contained a palace belonging to the archbishops of Gniezno. Skierniewice received municipal privileges in 1457 and flourished as a regional commercial hub along trade routes connecting major Polish cities and international destinations. It hosted annual fairs and served as a residence for the Primates of Poland in the 17th and 18th centuries, attracting figures such as Enlightenment poet Ignacy Krasicki. Over the centuries, the city experienced Swedish invasions, territorial partitions, wartime destructions, and foreign occupation before remaining a notable center for agricultural research and education.

Prominent sights include the former Episcopal Palace complex set within the Municipal Park, the historical Market Square featuring the Town Hall, and the churches of Saint James and Saint Stanislaus. Historic structures around town include the Kozłowski Villa, which functions as the local Wedding Palace, the County Office, and the local railway station alongside the Skierniewice Roundhouse. History enthusiasts can visit the Chamber of the History of Skierniewice, located in the former residence of Konstancja Gładkowska, a notable singer associated with Frédéric Chopin. Outdoor recreation is also readily available nearby at the adjacent Bolimów Landscape Park, a popular spot for hiking, camping, and kayaking.
