Why Starachowice
Starachowice is an industrial city located in southeastern Poland within the historic realm of Lesser Poland. Serving as the seat of Starachowice County in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, the city is situated along the Kamienna River, a tributary of the Vistula. The local topography is defined by rolling hills and surrounding forests.
The history of the area traces back to a 16th-century forge owned by the Starzechowski family, from whom the settlement likely derived its name. First mentioned in 1547, the early forge village was owned by Cistercian monks from nearby Wąchock Abbey, who initiated the construction of a blast furnace in 1789. In 1624, Bishop Bogusław Radoszewski established the adjacent town of Wierzbnik, which received civic rights from King Sigismund III Vasa and hosted weekly markets and annual fairs. Over time, both settlements belonged to the Sandomierz Voivodeship within the Polish Crown. Following partitions and territorial shifts through Austrian, Napoleonic, and Russian rule, Starachowice became a central hub for metallurgy along the Kamienna River under a regional industrial plan.
Industrial expansion continued into the 20th century. Following Poland's independence in 1918, a major arms manufacturing complex known as Zakłady Starachowickie was constructed, becoming a primary producer of military materiel and artillery guns. In April 1939, Wierzbnik merged with Starachowice Fabryczne and Starachowice Górne to formally establish the unified municipality, initially named Starachowice-Wierzbnik before taking its current name in 1952. During World War II, the city experienced heavy fighting, mass deportations, forced labor facilities, and the destruction of the local ghetto, while also serving as an active base for Polish Home Army resistance units. Post-war growth was driven by industry, including the establishment of the FSC Star truck factory in 1948, which notably produced the vehicle used for Pope John Paul II's first papal visit to Poland in 1979.
Today, visitors to Starachowice can explore a city reshaped by its manufacturing heritage, supported in modern times by a designated special economic zone. Sports enthusiasts can visit the Municipal Stadium, which has hosted local football clubs such as Juventa Starachowice and Star Starachowice, the latter having previously competed in Poland's Second Division. The city is also recognized as the birthplace of several notable Polish figures, including actors Krystyna Janda and Bogusz Bilewski, politician Krzysztof Lipiec, long-distance runner Rafał Wójcik, and professional athletes Radosław Majecki and Adrian Gunia.
