Why Koupéla
Koupéla is a city in Burkina Faso situated within a region historically settled by the Mossi people. Located in the eastern part of the country, it sits approximately 137 kilometers (85 miles) east of the capital city of Ouagadougou and roughly 82 kilometers (51 miles) west of Fada-Ngourma. The town is widely recognized for its traditional artistic heritage, particularly its pottery and sculpted artwork.
The city's artisanal reputation stems from its local geology, as craftspeople traditionally utilize the natural clay deposits found throughout the surrounding area to create regional ceramics and sculptures. These handcrafted items reflect the local artistic traditions developed within the Mossi cultural area.
Historically, Koupéla holds significance as the location where the first Catholic mission in Burkina Faso was established in the year 1900. Over the following century, the city grew into an important religious center for the region. Today, it serves as the seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese and features a prominent local cathedral, which remains one of the area's main architectural landmarks.
