Why Izium
Izium is a city situated along the Donets River in Kharkiv Oblast, located in eastern Ukraine. Positioned roughly 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Kharkiv, the region's capital, Izium serves as the administrative center for both Izium Raion and the Izium urban hromada. Historically recognized as an important transit link between Kharkiv and the Donbas region to the southeast, it stands as the second-most populous city in Kharkiv Oblast, with a population estimated at nearly 45,000 residents.
The surrounding area features a landscape shaped by the Donets River basin, the Mokryi Iziumets River, and nearby Mount Kremenets. Archaeological evidence indicates that human habitation dates back to ancient times. Discoveries from the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras—such as flint tools and ceramic artifacts—have been documented at local sites, including the Bondarisi archaeological tract, which gave its name to the ancient Bondarikha culture. The territory later formed part of Kievan Rus and was the location of the Battle of the Salnytsia River in 1111. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the area was crossed by the Izium Trail, a historic travel route.
The modern city traces its formal establishment to 1681, when a defense fortress was constructed by Colonel Donets of the Kharkiv Sloboda Cossack Regiment following the creation of regional defensive lines. The origin of the city's name remains subject to several theories, ranging from a Turkic term meaning a crossing to references to the local Iziumets River or early Tatar presence on Mount Kremenets. Between 1685 and 1765, Izium functioned as the seat of the local Cossack regiment before officially gaining city status within the Sloboda Ukraine region.
Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Izium developed into a major regional economic center. Industrial activity included factories producing bricks, butter, lard, wax, and vodka, alongside the export of wool and construction materials. The opening of the Kharkiv-Donbas railway line in 1910 and the establishment of an optical glass plant in 1916 further strengthened its position as a transport and manufacturing hub. Visitors to the city can view historical architecture such as the Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1684, and Saint Nicholas's Church, constructed between 1809 and 1823. Public landmarks also include John Lennon Square, which received its current name in 2016.
