Why Tan-Tan
Tan-Tan is a desert city located in southwestern Morocco within the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. Positioned along the banks of the Oued Ben Khelil wadi, it serves as the largest urban center in Tan-Tan Province and the second-largest in the broader region after Guelmim. Just 15 kilometers north of the town, the wadi joins the 1,100-kilometer Draa River—the longest river in Morocco—shortly before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
The town's name has an onomatopoeic origin, tracing back to a historic well known as Ḥāṣī Ṭānṭān. Historically, various Sahrawi tribal groups, including the Reguibat, Laaroussien, and the Ait Lahcin branch of the Tekna, gathered and pitched camp around this water source. The name was derived from the distinct ringing sound produced whenever buckets hit the water inside the well.
The surrounding countryside holds notable archaeological interest due to the discovery of the Venus of Tan-Tan. Uncovered in a river terrace deposit along the northern bank of the Draa River, this quartz figurine is dated between 200,000 and 500,000 BCE. It is recognized as one of the oldest human-form artifacts ever found, though debate remains over whether its shape is man-made or a natural formation.
Approximately 25 kilometers west of the inland settlement sits its coastal harbor town, referred to as Tan-Tan Plage, the Port of Tan-Tan, or El Ouatia. Positioned directly on the Atlantic Ocean, this coastal locality represents the second-largest settlement in the province. Both the main inland city and the port town are accessible via Morocco's primary N1 highway, while regional air transit is served by the nearby Tan Tan Plage Blanche Airport.
Tan-Tan features a hot desert climate that is heavily tempered by the cold offshore Canary Current. Because of this maritime presence, winter nights consistently stay well above freezing. However, hot easterly winds sweeping in from the Saharan interior can briefly elevate temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius throughout different times of the year. Due to seasonal lag in ocean warming and frequent autumn winds, average afternoon temperatures in October are actually higher than those in July.
