Why Stung Treng

Stung Treng, also known as Stung Treng City, is an urban destination in northern Cambodia serving as the administrative capital of both Stung Treng Province and its surrounding district. The city's name translates to river of reeds, combining the local term for river with the word for reed.

The settlement is geographically situated along the banks of the Sesan River, close to where it merges with the Mekong River. Positioned approximately 50 kilometers south of the international border with Laos, it sits roughly 376 kilometers away from the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

Functioning as an regional transit hub, Stung Treng features a busy river port located near its city park. This port facilitates both passenger transportation and cross-border commercial trade between Cambodia and Laos.

Overland access to and around the area is supported by National Highway 7. Two primary river crossings serve the city's transport network: the Stung Treng Bridge spanning the Mekong River and the Sekong Bridge crossing the Sekong River. Although Stung Treng Airport exists nearby, it does not currently offer regularly scheduled commercial flights.
