Why Warrnambool

Located on the south-western coast of Victoria, Australia, Warrnambool sits at the junction of the Princes Highway, the Hopkins Highway, and the western end of the Great Ocean Road. The city functions as a regional service hub and coastal destination. Its climate is classified as temperate Mediterranean, featuring mild, relatively dry summers alongside cool, rainy winters with moderate cloud cover and regular cold fronts.

Aboriginal Australians, including the Gunditjmara people, have inhabited the region for tens of thousands of years. Early inhabitants built timber and stone weirs across local waterways like the Merri River to harvest eels. European involvement in the area developed through early nineteenth-century whaling and coastal exploration, followed by the establishment of an agricultural homestead in 1838. The township was surveyed in 1845 and named after a nearby volcanic scoria cone, later growing rapidly as a port during the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s.

Warrnambool's main business district is centered along Liebig Street and is characterized by numerous roundabouts. Nearby, the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens features wide curving pathways, rare trees, a fernery, a band rotunda, and a lily pond populated by ducks. The local foreshore and adjacent Lake Pertobe parklands are long-standing areas for beachgoing and swimming. Additionally, the Deep Blue Hot Springs facility provides outdoor and indoor bathing options using geothermal mineral water sourced deep beneath the ground.

Maritime history forms a prominent part of the local heritage. Situated on Flagstaff Hill, the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and Museum features historic garrison structures, lighthouses, and a collection of shipwreck artifacts, including a valuable Minton ceramic peacock recovered from the Loch Ard. The nearby Lady Bay Lighthouse complex continues to serve as an active navigation aid. Off the coast, visitors during the winter months can view Southern Right whales at the Logan's Beach nursery or take whale-watching boat tours.

The city hosts a variety of community and sporting events throughout the year. The annual Wunta Fiesta brings live entertainment and music to the area every February. On the Australia Day long weekend, motorsport fans gather for the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at Premier Speedway. Warrnambool also serves as the finish line for the Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic, the world's longest one-day bicycle endurance race, and hosts major horse racing events including the multi-jump Grand Annual Steeplechase.
