Why Linden

Linden is the second-largest city in Guyana after Georgetown and serves as the capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region. Located along the Demerara River at an elevation of 48 meters, the municipality was officially declared a town in 1970. It was formed by unifying the historical settlements of Wismar, MacKenzie, and Christianburg under President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, who named the newly established township after himself. The community is situated roughly 105 kilometers south of Georgetown and has a population exceeding 33,000 people.

The town's historical development is fundamentally linked to bauxite mining, which began commercially in 1916. Early exploration was conducted by American geologist George Bain Mackenzie, who purchased land and introduced wooden barges to transport crude ore down the Demerara River. Over the decades, industrial operations expanded to include crushing, sorting, and drying facilities, alongside residential housing, medical facilities, water supplies, and mechanical workshops. The bauxite sector underwent several changes in ownership and governance over time, including nationalization in 1971 and subsequent corporate restructurings.

Decades of surface mining left behind deep pits ranging from 60 to 90 meters, many of which are now disused. Some of these abandoned excavations filled with water to form bright blue lakes. Among these, the Kara Kara Blue Lake has become a prominent location for leisure and local tourism, while Bamia Creek serves as another popular gathering area. Within the town center, the Linden Museum of Socio-Cultural Heritage presents a collection of photographs and historical items that illustrate the heritage of the local community. Another notable historic site is the Christiansburg Water Wheel, a large iron structure set up in 1895 to power timber sawmilling equipment.

Beyond the immediate urban area, Gluck Island on the Essequibo River offers an accessible eco-tourism destination. Located roughly 70 kilometers from the river's mouth, this uninhabited island is home to roughly 200 documented bird species, including macaws, parrots, and herons. Visitors to the island can spot giant otters during early morning hours or observe large caimans at night. Gluck Island is also known for lakes filled with lush vegetation and the giant Victoria Regia Water Lily, whose floating leaves reach over a meter in diameter.
