Why Bakhchysarai

Bakhchysarai is a historical city situated in a narrow valley along the Çürük Suv river, approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Simferopol. It serves as the administrative center of the Bakhchysarai Raion and was previously the capital of the Crimean Khanate. The location's name derives from Persian words meaning garden palace, mirroring the Crimean Tatar terms where garden translates to bağça and palace to saray.

Human presence in the surrounding valley dates back to the Mesolithic era, with organized settlements established by Late Antiquity. Over time, older fortified locations such as Qırq Yer (now known as Çufut Qale), Salaçıq, and Eski Yurt were integrated into the modern city boundaries. First mentioned in records in 1502, Bakhchysarai became the residence of Crimean Khan Sahib I Giray in 1532, developing into the political and cultural core for the Crimean Tatar population. The community survived a Cossack raid in 1675 and widespread burning during the Russo-Turkish War in 1736. After the Russian Empire annexed the Crimean Khanate in 1783, the town lost its political prominence, though it remained a cultural hub nurtured by figures like Ismail Gaspirali, who established the newspaper Terciman there in 1883.

During the Crimean War of 1853–1856, Bakhchysarai functioned primarily as a treatment center for wounded Russian soldiers, with the nearby Battle of the Alma taking place in 1854. Following the end of the Russian Empire, the town became part of the Soviet Union in 1922. In May 1944, the Crimean Tatar population was forcibly exiled during the Sürgün, and exiled families were unable to return to the town until Soviet policies relaxed in 1989. Bakhchysarai joined independent Ukraine in 1991, and later came under Russian control following an invasion and annexation in 2014.

The prominent center of interest in the city is Hansaray, the sole surviving palace of the Crimean Khans, which currently functions as a museum. Visitors can also explore notable sites such as Eski Yurt, Eski Dürbe, the Orta Cami Mosque, the Tahtali-Jami Mosque, the Cave Monastery, the Zincirli Madrasa, and the nearby cave sites of Chufut-Kale and Tepe-Kermen.

Outdoor enthusiasts can utilize a system of marked hiking paths surrounding the town, including a primary red-marked route that links all the major sights. From 2011 to 2014, local tourism services received backing from USAID and the Czech government. The city has inspired notable literary works, including Alexander Pushkin's 1822 poem regarding its fountain and Adam Mickiewicz's 1825 Crimean Sonnets. It also lends its name to the asteroid 3242 Bakhchisaraj, discovered by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh in 1979. Modern Bakhchysarai maintains a sister city relationship with Bursa, Turkey.
