Why Reda, Poland
Reda is a town of around 28,000 inhabitants situated along the Reda River in northern Poland. Located within the Pomeranian Voivodeship and Wejherowo County, it belongs to the historic region of Kashubia. Together with its neighboring municipalities of Wejherowo to the west and Rumia to the south, Reda forms an urban group known as the Little Kashubian Tricity. This area sits directly adjacent to the larger Tricity agglomeration along the Baltic coast of Gdańsk Bay, a major urban region with more than one million residents.
The history of human settlement in the area dates back to the Early Middle Ages, when Slavic Lechitic communities inhabited places such as Ciechocino and Pieleszewo, which are now districts of the town. A wooden church was built in the vicinity by the 12th century, and written records first referenced Reda in 1357. Control over the region shifted over the centuries; after being annexed by the Teutonic Order in 1309, it was re-incorporated into the Polish Crown in 1454 under King Casimir IV Jagiellon. Industrial growth began in 1768 when King Stanisław August Poniatowski authorized the construction of a local brass manufacturing plant.
Following the First Partition of Poland in 1772, Reda came under Prussian and later German control for nearly 150 years, though its population remained predominantly Polish and Catholic during the late 19th century. Reda returned to Poland in January 1920 after World War I. During World War II, German forces captured the town in September 1939, until Polish troops liberated it in March 1945. Reda officially received town rights in 1967 when its population stood at 5,400, after which it experienced rapid growth, reaching over 17,000 residents by 1999.
Visitors traveling through Reda can explore its distinct historic neighborhoods, including Ciechocino, Pieleszewo, and Rekowo. For local athletics, the town is home to the football club Orlęta Reda, which plays in the lower regional leagues. Transportation throughout the area and to the broader Baltic coast is well-supported by established highway connections and regional rail services, with regular trains stopping at the Reda, Reda Pieleszewo, and Reda Rekowo railway stations.
