Why Bongor
Bongor is a prominent city located in southwestern Chad, serving as the capital of the Mayo-Kebbi Est region. It sits along the eastern bank of the Logone River. The city plays a vital role in the agricultural economy of the surrounding countryside, where cotton and rice are cultivated as the primary cash crops.
Historically part of German Cameroon, Bongor's modern era began in 1904 when the German colonial officer Herbert Kund established a military post nearby. The area remained under German control until the German-French Treaty of 1911. Indigenous culture in the region is predominantly defined by the Masa people. Bongor also holds an important place in regional educational history; since the colonial period, it has been a center for secondary schooling, most notably through the Lycée Jacques Modeina, which educated numerous future leaders of nations formed after French Equatorial Africa dissolved.
Visitors to Bongor can experience its lively urban core, which features a vibrant central market square. Monday serves as the main market day, drawing people from across the entire region to buy and sell goods. Travelers will also find a hotel positioned along the bank of the Logone River, offering scenic views of the waterway.
In addition to its commercial hub, Bongor houses key regional services, including a hospital, a post office, and the administrative offices for the Mayo-Kebbi Prefecture. The city is serviced by its own local airport. Transport along the Logone River is seasonal; during the rainy months spanning May through September, the river becomes navigable for travel between Bongor and Chad's national capital, N'Djamena.
