Located in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, Newark Liberty International Airport sits about 4.5 miles south of downtown Newark and 9 miles west-southwest of Manhattan. Serving as a major international gateway to Europe, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean, it stands as the second-busiest airport in the New York metropolitan system behind JFK.

As the largest hub for United Airlines, EWR hosted 49.1 million passengers in its busiest year on record in 2023. United serves roughly 63% of the airport's travelers. Alongside major international carriers like Singapore Airlines, the facility operates as a key hub for both commercial passenger routes and large-scale cargo operations through FedEx Express.

The airport is organized around three passenger terminals: Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C. Getting between facilities or connecting to New York City and New Jersey is straightforward thanks to AirTrain Newark, an automated monorail system linking the terminals directly to regional NJ Transit and Amtrak rail services at Newark Liberty International Airport Station.

01 Terminals & concourses

Terminal A

Re-opened in December 2022 following a major redevelopment project, Terminal A features 33 gates designed to accommodate flexible narrow-body and wide-body aircraft operations.

Terminal B

Terminal B serves passenger traffic and features an International Arrivals Facility to handle arriving overseas flights.

Terminal C

Terminal C serves as United Airlines' dedicated Global Gateway, featuring three concourses, a wide-body maintenance hangar, and a Federal Inspection Services facility.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage at EWR

If your checked bag doesn't turn up on the belt, act before you leave the baggage-claim area — that's where every airline keeps its Baggage Service Office.

  1. Go to your airline's Baggage Service Office in the baggage-claim hall of your arrival terminal.
  2. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your file reference (WorldTracer) number. Keep your bag-tag receipt and boarding pass.
  3. Track it online using that reference on your airline's baggage-tracking page — most bags are located within 24–48 hours.
  4. Claim your essentials. On delayed bags airlines reimburse reasonable interim purchases (toiletries, clothing) — keep receipts. International trips are covered by the Montreal Convention.
  5. If it's truly lost (generally after 21 days) or damaged, file the claim at the same office — damage must be reported before you leave the airport.

Left something in the terminal (not a checked bag)? That's handled by the airport Lost & Found. Items left at a TSA security checkpoint are held by the TSA, not the airline.
