Located about 17 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh in Findlay and Moon townships, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh International Airport serves the Greater Pittsburgh Region alongside nearby areas of West Virginia and Ohio. Covering 10,000 acres with four runways, it is Pennsylvania's largest civil airport by land area. Owned and operated by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, the airport offers passenger flights throughout North America, the Caribbean, and Europe.

First opened in 1952, the airport underwent a massive expansion that created a landside terminal for ticketing and security alongside an X-shaped airside terminal for gates. The two primary terminal structures are linked via an underground tram. While historically built as a major hub for US Airways, the airport has transitioned to focus heavily on local origin and destination travellers with a growing set of airlines.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage at PIT

If your checked bag doesn't turn up on the belt, act before you leave the baggage-claim area — that's where every airline keeps its Baggage Service Office.

  1. Go to your airline's Baggage Service Office in the baggage-claim hall of your arrival terminal.
  2. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your file reference (WorldTracer) number. Keep your bag-tag receipt and boarding pass.
  3. Track it online using that reference on your airline's baggage-tracking page — most bags are located within 24–48 hours.
  4. Claim your essentials. On delayed bags airlines reimburse reasonable interim purchases (toiletries, clothing) — keep receipts. International trips are covered by the Montreal Convention.
  5. If it's truly lost (generally after 21 days) or damaged, file the claim at the same office — damage must be reported before you leave the airport.

Left something in the terminal (not a checked bag)? That's handled by the airport Lost & Found. Items left at a TSA security checkpoint are held by the TSA, not the airline.
