Located about seven miles southeast of downtown Richmond in Sandston, Virginia, Richmond International Airport is a joint civil-military facility covering 2,500 acres. Owned and operated by the Capital Region Airport Commission, it serves as central Virginia's busiest airport. Handling domestic destinations alongside seasonal international flights, RIC plays a critical role for both regional passenger transportation and expanding air cargo logistics along the Eastern Seaboard.

The airport features a modern two-level terminal layout with upper-level departures and lower-level arrivals, created during a major redesign completed in 2007. Ongoing facility expansions continuously increase capacity, including broadened security checkpoints, a multi-gate extension of Concourse A completed in 2021, and planned central checkpoint consolidations. Travelers navigate two main concourses housed under this single terminal structure.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage at RIC

If your checked bag doesn't turn up on the belt, act before you leave the baggage-claim area — that's where every airline keeps its Baggage Service Office.

  1. Go to your airline's Baggage Service Office in the baggage-claim hall of your arrival terminal.
  2. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your file reference (WorldTracer) number. Keep your bag-tag receipt and boarding pass.
  3. Track it online using that reference on your airline's baggage-tracking page — most bags are located within 24–48 hours.
  4. Claim your essentials. On delayed bags airlines reimburse reasonable interim purchases (toiletries, clothing) — keep receipts. International trips are covered by the Montreal Convention.
  5. If it's truly lost (generally after 21 days) or damaged, file the claim at the same office — damage must be reported before you leave the airport.

Left something in the terminal (not a checked bag)? That's handled by the airport Lost & Found. Items left at a TSA security checkpoint are held by the TSA, not the airline.
