Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is a 6,000-acre public commercial airport situated 10.5 miles northwest of Downtown Sacramento, serving as the primary airport for the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. It provides convenient regional access to Northern and Central California attractions like Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, and Wine Country.
The airport is operated by the Sacramento County Airport System and features two parallel concrete runways. SMF consists of two main passenger complexes, Terminal A and Terminal B, which together offer 32 gates equipped with free indoor Wi-Fi service.
Airlines are split across both spaces, with Major carriers operating out of Terminal A while others handle flights out of Terminal B. An Automated People Mover (APM) helps transfer passengers efficiently at Terminal B, while future developments plan to further link the facilities.
01 Terminals & concourses
Terminal A opened in 1998 and offers 13 gates for air travel. It features a six-story parking garage connected via a walkway housing public art.
Opened in 2011, Terminal B is a LEED Silver-certified building offering 19 gates. It relies on an Automated People Mover system to transport passengers to Concourse B.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage at SMF
If your checked bag doesn't turn up on the belt, act before you leave the baggage-claim area — that's where every airline keeps its Baggage Service Office.
- Go to your airline's Baggage Service Office in the baggage-claim hall of your arrival terminal.
- File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your file reference (WorldTracer) number. Keep your bag-tag receipt and boarding pass.
- Track it online using that reference on your airline's baggage-tracking page — most bags are located within 24–48 hours.
- Claim your essentials. On delayed bags airlines reimburse reasonable interim purchases (toiletries, clothing) — keep receipts. International trips are covered by the Montreal Convention.
- If it's truly lost (generally after 21 days) or damaged, file the claim at the same office — damage must be reported before you leave the airport.
Left something in the terminal (not a checked bag)? That's handled by the airport Lost & Found. Items left at a TSA security checkpoint are held by the TSA, not the airline.
