Located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana features an iconic 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) balneario beach stretching along the Atlantic oceanfront from Posto Dois to Posto Seis. Getting to the area is straightforward, as the borough is served by more than 40 bus routes and three Metro subway stations: Cantagalo, Siqueira Campos, and Cardeal Arcoverde. Major parallel thoroughfares, including the seaside Avenida Atlântica, seamlessly connect the district to the rest of the city.

The coastal landscape is lined by the famous Copacabana promenade, a 4-kilometer pavement designed by Roberto Burle Marx with a signature black-and-white geometric wave design. High-rise residential buildings eleven to thirteen stories high dominate the backdrop, alongside numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. At both ends of the shore stand historic structures: Fort Duque de Caxias, built in 1779 at the north end, and Fort Copacabana, constructed in 1914 at the south end.

Copacabana caters to visitors seeking an energetic atmosphere and world-class public events. On Sundays and holidays, one side of Avenida Atlântica closes to traffic to allow pedestrians and revellers extra space for beachfront activities. The beach famously hosts millions for annual New Year's Eve fireworks, high-profile music concerts, and major sporting events—including beach volleyball during the 2016 Summer Olympics and multiple FIFA Beach Soccer World Cups.
