Located along Kenya's Indian Ocean coast in Kwale County, Diani Beach sits 30 kilometres south of Mombasa. This major coastal destination has welcomed travellers since the mid-1900s, traditionally reached by road from Mombasa via the Likoni Ferry. Visitors can also fly into Ukunda Airport, a small airstrip positioned between the shoreline and the Mombasa-Lunga Lunga road. Diani Beach spans approximately 17 kilometres, extending from the Congo River at its northern edge down to Galu Beach in the south, marked by an old Baobab tree. At low tide, the ocean recedes to reveal remarkably shallow waters and near-surface underwater sandbars. These conditions allow you to wade across the clear, sandy seabed all the way out toward the offshore reef. Lined with extensive inland vegetation and sweeping palm trees across the coastal landscape, the beach offers a relaxed coastal atmosphere.
Beyond its sandy shores, Diani Beach is rich in local heritage and coastal culture. The indigenous Digo community, one of the nine Mijikenda ethnic groups, forms the cultural roots of the area alongside residents drawn by the region's tourism. At the northern tip where the Mwachema or Kongo River separates Diani from neighboring Tiwi, stands the 16th-century Kongo Mosque. As the last remaining ancient Swahili structure in Diani, it offers a historic touchpoint right where the river meets the ocean.
