Located along the west coast of Hawaii's Big Island, Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area sits west of the Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19, also known as the Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway) on Hapuna Beach Road. Positioned roughly 2.3 miles south of Kawaihae, this 61.8-acre park provides easy access to one of the island's most famous coastal stretches for both local residents and off-island visitors.
As one of the rare white sand beaches on the western side of the Big Island, Hāpuna offers a expansive sandy shoreline fronting the open ocean. Because the beach is not protected from the open sea, conditions can produce high surf and hazardous waters. Lifeguards are stationed on site to monitor conditions, making it a spectacular destination that twice earned the title of Best Beach in America from Dr. Beach.
The park provides a welcoming atmosphere equipped with paved parking, restrooms, showers, pavilions, and designated picnic areas. A section of the historical Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail runs right through the park grounds, connecting Spencer Beach to the north with Puako to the south. This makes the area ideal for day-trippers, picnickers, hikers, and campers holding valid permits.
