Why ʿAmrān
ʿAmrān is a small historical city situated in western central Yemen. Serving as the administrative capital of the 'Amran Governorate, the settlement was previously classified within the Sana'a Governorate. It occupies a position at the southern, upper boundary of the al-Bawn plain, situated approximately 52.9 kilometers (32.9 miles) by road to the northwest of Sana'a. The population of the city was recorded at 76,863 during the 2004 census and was estimated to reach 92,763 by 2013.
The history of ʿAmrān extends back to the pre-Islamic era, when it functioned as a major hub for the Bakil tribal confederation. During the reign of the Sabaean kingdom, the settlement developed into a fortified stronghold. In the mid-nineteenth century, a set of Sabaean bronze plaques was discovered within the town, artifacts that are currently preserved in the British Museum. The area also experienced conflict against the Sabaeans during the seventh century. Although ʿAmrān was largely overlooked in medieval records—during which time the nearby strategic settlement of al-Jannat held greater prominence—it reemerged as an important site from the late 14th century onward.
Visitors to the area can observe significant architectural remnants and historical landmarks. The ancient center is entirely encircled by defensive walls constructed in 1720, and its western gateway, known as Bab al-Kabir, features a substantial stone inscription. Throughout the town, carved stone remains from ancient temples and palaces provide evidence of its early heritage. Additionally, the historic marketplace is recognized for its traditional stone columns.
Surrounding ʿAmrān, the agricultural terrain features stepped hillside terraces held by stone walls designed to prevent soil erosion across the fertile land. The city historically served as a focal point for regional coffee production. In terms of modern infrastructure, a modernized paved road stretching over 200 kilometers (120 miles) connects the city to Sana'a following investment from China, and a former medical clinic has been redeveloped into a small public hospital.
