Why Abreu e Lima
Abreu e Lima is a municipality situated in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, forming part of the Greater Recife metropolitan area. The local territory spans approximately 126 square kilometers, positioned about 22 kilometers from the city of Recife. While rural landscapes constitute around three-quarters of the land area, the vast majority of the population resides within its urban center. Access to the municipality is primarily provided via the BR 101 highway.
The town bears the name of José Inácio de Abreu e Lima, a historic military figure who engaged in Pernambucan battles and fought alongside Simón Bolívar during the independence conflicts of Venezuela and Colombia. The municipality also holds historical significance as the site of the first public demonstration for the Diretas Já movement in March 1983. Religiously, the municipality is notable for having a significant Evangelical Christian population, which is recognized locally each year on October 31 through Evangelical Awareness Day.
More than 70 percent of Abreu e Lima is covered by pristine Atlantic Forest and protected ecological areas, including the Caetés and São Bento reserves. The geography features small coastal rivers, along with natural vegetation consisting of mangroves, capoeirinha, sugarcane fields, and rainforest. The regional climate is characterized as hot, tropical, and humid, maintaining a mean annual temperature of roughly 25.2 °C.
Cultural life and traditional folklore serve as central attractions for visitors to Abreu e Lima. Guests can experience live Maracatu dance performances showcasing vibrant drum rhythms, as well as Ciranda dance groups like the one directed by Dona Odete do Coco. The city's primary annual celebration is the Emancipation Festival, which takes place every year on May 14. Economic activity in the area relies largely on general commerce, agriculture, and manufacturing industries, with a focus on metallurgy and chemical production.
