Why Abu Musa Island
Abu Musa is a 12.8-square-kilometer island situated in the eastern Persian Gulf, near the approach to the Strait of Hormuz. Administered as part of Hormozgan province in Iran, it sits 70 kilometers south of Bandar-e Shenas and 59 kilometers north-northwest of Sharjah. It is the most distant from the mainland among the fourteen islands of Hormozgan. The surrounding maritime channels are exceptionally deep, allowing passage for major oil tankers and large vessels.
The main urban settlement on the island is Abu Musa city, which acts as the local administrative center. The topography includes Mount Halva, which serves as the highest point on the island at an elevation of 110 meters. Historically, regional Persian names for the land translated to terms such as "great green place" or "waterland."
The local environment is characterized by a warm to hot climate throughout the year, with average temperatures remaining above 20 degrees Celsius and most precipitation occurring during the winter season. While the island possesses a varied ecosystem compared to neighboring landmasses in the gulf, it lacks adequate soil and fresh water for agricultural cultivation. As a result, fishing forms the primary economic activity for the resident population.
Historical governance over the island spans pre-Islamic Persian dynasties, a period of sixteenth-century Portuguese rule, and subsequent British involvement during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Travelers traveling to or from the island are served by the regional Abu Musa Airport.
