Why Agaléga
Agaléga is a remote outer dependency of Mauritius situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 1,050 kilometers north of Mauritius Island. The territory consists of two outer islets, North Island and South Island, which together cover a total land area of 2,600 hectares. Administered under the Mauritian Prime Minister's Office through the Outer Island Development Corporation and overseen locally by a resident steward, the small archipelago is home to around 330 residents, who are known as Agaléens.
The islands feature likely coral terrain, expansive coconut groves, and coastal mangroves, with their highest elevation located at Montagne d'Emmerez on North Island. Surrounded by coral reefs that produce strong surf, the islets serve as the habitat for the Agalega day gecko. Agaléga experiences a hot, humid tropical climate with an annual mean temperature of 26 °C, reaching its highest temperatures in April. Tropical weather events, such as cyclones, occasionally affect the isolated landmasses.
European awareness of the archipelago stems from early 16th-century Portuguese maritime expeditions, with permanent residency taking shape in the early 19th century. During the 1800s, administrator Auguste Le Duc established the production of copra and coconut oil, which remains the primary economic activity. Historic sites from this era persist today, including old slave dungeons, a historic oil mill, separate cemeteries, and the main settlement of Vingt-Cinq on North Island. The predominant local culture is Creole-speaking and largely Catholic, featuring distinct island folklore and a specialized coded language variant known as Madam langaz Seret.
Residential life is concentrated in Vingt-Cinq and La Fourche on North Island, as well as St. Rita on South Island, connected by roads made of sand and coral. Basic services on North Island include a government primary school, a health office, a police station, a meteorological post, and a telecommunications branch. Drinking supply relies on harvested rainwater, while electricity is provided by scheduled diesel generators. Access to Agaléga is available by air via an airstrip on North Island and by sea, where supply vessels anchor roughly 500 meters offshore near the pier at St James Anchorage.
