Why Agdash

Agdash is a city located in central Azerbaijan, serving as the administrative seat of the surrounding Agdash District. Situated within a region historically noted for its agricultural developments, the town previously bore the name Arash until it was renamed in 1919. It was also known as Uchgovag during its earlier history as a small village within the Shaki Khanate.

During the nineteenth century, the region underwent multiple administrative reconfigurations under Russian imperial governance. The territory transitioned through the Shaki Khanate, Shaki Province, and various administrative divisions including the Kaspi Province, Shamakhi Governorate, Baku Province, and Yelizavetpol Governorate. In 1873, a distinct administrative county known as the Aresh uezd was established from the broader Nukha territory, centering around the area.

Agdash gained international prominence in the late nineteenth century as a major regional hub for the cotton industry. Beginning in 1887, commercial cotton fields, Chinese processing machinery, and packaging presses were introduced to the settlement. By the late 1890s, several processing factories were operational, leading to a dramatic increase in cotton sales at the local market. This rapid industrial growth elevated the town into a primary center for Caucasian cotton production and trade, culminating in Agdash hosting the inaugural congress of Caucasian cotton growers in 1904.

In addition to its agricultural history, the settlement developed into an important regional educational center. Prior to receiving official city status in 1900, the area contained approximately twenty traditional madrasahs. A landmark Russian-Tatar school was founded in October 1882 by the educator Suleyman Gayibov, representing one of the earliest modern institutions of its kind in Azerbaijan. By the early twentieth century, the town supported various civic and educational societies, a public reading room, and specialized schools such as the Saadat girls' school, staffed by notable local educators.

Visitors to modern Agdash experience a historic town that has been thoroughly restored following substantial structural damage caused by an earthquake in June 1999.
