Welcome to the Alexander Theatre, affectionately known as The Alex, a historic performance space located in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Conceived back in 1929 and eventually constructed in 1951 through public donations and life memberships, this venue originally served as the home for the Johannesburg Repertory Players. In 1960, it was renamed in honor of Muriel Alexander, a celebrated actress, director, and drama teacher.

When you visit, you are stepping into a site deeply tied to Johannesburg’s cultural evolution, featuring an auditorium built with a distinctive Scandinavian design. Over the decades, the stage hosted iconic plays, professional performances, and major theater councils before closing in 1997 amid urban decay. Today, thanks to ambitious revitalization efforts—including a major refurbishment program in 2001 and further restorations in 2006 that carefully preserved as much of the original architecture as possible—the theatre has vibrant new life.

Inside, you can see a restored 536-seat main auditorium along with various event rooms. The venue functions as a remarkably versatile space used for concerts, television programs, lively parties, conferences, award ceremonies, and charity performances. Plan your visit to appreciate this resilient architectural gem in the heart of Braamfontein's ongoing urban renewal.
