Why Ambo

Ambo is a notable town located in the West Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region in west-central Ethiopia, positioned west of Addis Ababa. Serving as the administrative capital of the West Shewa Zone, the town sits at an elevation of 2,101 meters. Ambo is widely recognized throughout the country for its bottled mineral water, which is sourced just outside of town and stands as Ethiopia's most famous mineral water brand.

The town has a long history as a leisure spot, developing thermal bath cabins, concrete cisterns, and early hotel facilities for visitors and officials during the early 1930s. Over the decades, Ambo grew into an important regional hub, receiving early infrastructural developments such as telephone services, hydro-electric power, and educational institutions. Historically, it served as a location for military encampments, agricultural research, and significant political movements driven largely by its vibrant student community.

Visitors to the area can explore several natural attractions situated close to the town. Mount Wenchi, located to the south, is famous for its scenic crater lake. The region also features notable natural cascades, including the Guder, Teltele, and Huluka waterfalls. Within the town, open-air markets are held weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, offering a look at local commercial life.

Ambo is also an established center for education and agricultural science. It houses Ambo University, a historical senior secondary school that has educated notable national figures, and an agricultural research station founded in 1977 under the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research to focus on protecting the nation's key crops.
